I know you just bought a new laptop and you’ve experienced that your laptop is slow but why does it happen? Even if you just bought it brand new however you might have seen this issue in your old laptops but it should not be there in brand new devices.
According to research and expert opinion, there can be many causes of it such as bloatware, slow primary drive, startup programs, and insufficient cooling system that causes heat in your laptop and it leads to slow performance in your device.
I know it’s too sad when you bought a brand new laptop but couldn’t get that much performance from it that you had expected while buying or choosing this laptop. But don’t worry there are various fixes for this problem you can try them out.
Before I get towards the possible fixes of new laptops’ slow performance, I would recommend you if you recently bought it then go get back to that shop and return to them and claim your money or change the device. But if you’re out of range or your warranty is expired now then you can try these fixes that may eliminate your low-performance problem.
And I’d suggest you before buying a laptop you must take a guide from an expert or see that device’s reviews on social media so you can get a quick idea of that device’s performance and issues that you’re gonna face after buying that device. As you’ve to pay them your hard-earned money, buy a device that returns your money in terms of performance.
Eliminate Bloatware
So one of the first things that you should look for, is bloatware in your new devices because it is the most common cause of a brand new laptop’s low performance. All those software that you don’t use even if you didn’t install them are called bloatware. Many companies put their default software on their devices so you can uninstall them or remove them.
There is the most commonly installed bloatware on your brand new laptops:
Browser Add ons
Before using your new device you must check your browser, if it has pre-installed browser addons or extensions, you can uninstall them because they consume much of your performance while using that particular browser.
You must use a lighter browser such as Google Chrome to consume minimum performance and give you good output results.
Manufacturer Info Softwares
Sometimes manufacturers install their Info or specific software in their new devices such as HP installs an HP About software that tells basic specifications of your device. But there is no usage of it, you can just uninstall them from Settings App>>Apps>>Unistall.
Ani-Virus
If you want a perfect example of bloatware then anti-virus could be the best example of it. Because most laptop manufacturers install a basic anti-virus, so they can protect your files and data from your device but windows already have it so you don’t need another anti-virus.
Windows defender can be your best anti-virus that protects your devices from various kinds of viruses that can cause damage to your files and even devices too.
Primary Drive
The second most common cause of your slower laptop can be the slow or damaged primary drive that can SSD or HDD. As the primary drive plays the role of the operating system drive so it must be fine and faster to get good performance. You can check your drive if it’s faulty then go and fix it. And if it is full of space then clear most of the space so that windows files can be loaded easily.
If you have an SSD as a primary drive then it’s great because it’s must faster than HDD and there are fewer chances of its damage. But if you don’t have then if you have a bit more money then you can HDD to SSD even if you can copy-paste your data from HDD to SSD.
How to Check If Hard Drive is SSD or HDD?
To check this you can just simply go to Windows Task Manager or can press Control + Shift + Esc to open it directly then go to the performance tab and then you’ll see your primary hardware parts such as CPU, GPU, and drives. You’ll see just under the names of your drive SSD or HDD.
End Startup programs
When your device is booting slower or performance is slow because whenever you start up your laptop or pc then it may require free and faster space to load the windows files. But on startup, some of the programs would run automatically by default and they could be the main reason for it. Because whenever you start up your device it automatically runs and consumes a lot of storage, ram, and CPU usage. That causes a slower boot of your laptop.
So to get rid of this problem you just have to go to Windows Task Manager or open it directly by pressing CTRL + Shift + ESC. Then go to the Startup tab and there you’ll see the status of your programs on startup, it will be Disabled or Enabled. If you feel that some of your software is running without any reason on startup then just right-click on them and disable them, it’ll surely optimize your boot speed.
Weak Cooling system
It’s common sense that whenever any kind of electric device runs it converts a small amount of its energy into heat energy. The same case with laptops, when you use them they get heat up and your laptop should have a good cooling system to keep it under an exceeding temperature.
Overheating most probably could be another reason for your slower brand-new laptop. So you may think why my laptop heats up even though it’s new. There are multiples causes of it such as:
- Use your device on a hard surface without any gap between the laptop and the surface.
- Direct contact with sunlight or any heat source.
- A poor cooling system or design.
- Poor quality thermal paste might have been used in it.
Despite these reasons, you can use your laptop anywhere on the bed or on your lap but must keep a gap between the surface and your laptop so the cooling system can perform well by regulating air. But if you have a poor design? Or do you have a poor cooling system? So then you may ask what should I do if I have a poor cooling system on my laptop. You can simply buy a cooling system for your laptop to keep it at a good temperature and avoid overheating.
Incorrect Power Adapter
You must have heard that you should always use your original charging or power adapter for your devices and it’s more useful. So then you heard it right. An over or lower-powered adapter can cause overheating in your laptop to avoid it you must use your original laptop’s charger if you haven’t then go and buy a new one with the same specifications but don’t use any other one.
Disable Power Saver Features
Maybe power-saving features are making your laptop slower because whenever you enable power-saving mode then your laptop’s performance went half of its full performance. To get it on maximum performance go and disable power-saving features especially when you’re powering up through your power adapter. Because there is no need of a power-saving mode as you’re directly connected to the power supply.
You can directly disable power saving options from Control Panel>>Power>>Power Options>>High Performance. Or you can directly put default Blanace, Hgh Promfnacen, and Ultimate performance commands in the command prompt or power shell as an admin.
Check Wifi Module
If you’re facing a slow browsing speed or downloading speed although you have a good internet connection. So, then your damaged wifi module can be the main reason if it is because it is not able to deliver your connection’s speed to your device then surely, it’s faulty or a slower one. You can check your adapter by a speed test, if the speed test is showing less speed than your actual internet speed then it’s the adapter’s driver or adapter’s fault.
In this case, you’ve multiple options to solve this issue. Firstly, you can simply change your adapter, and secondly, you can just use an Ethernet cable instead of an adapter. It will improve your browsing speed and will reduce latency.
Or to check your WIFI signal strength go close to your router and check if signals or speed increases then maybe your router could be faulty as well. Although the distance is not only the factor of decrease in speed, any disturbance can cause it such as walls, curtains, etc.
But wait before checking all of this stuff, don’t forget to check your internet’s actual speed otherwise if your speed is slow from your internet service provider (ISP) then no adapter or Ethernet cable can do anything.
Low RAM or CPU
Both RAM and CPU play an important role in your laptop’s performance. So just take a go-through of your RAM and CPU. If they’re underpowered then you can’t do anything to optimize their performance more than their actual performance. You’ve only one option to do change or upgrade your RAM and CPU.
If you just bought it recently then go back, return it and claim your money back and choose another one with good specifications. If you want to check anything that is underpowered then go to Windows Task manager or open It directly by pressing CTRL+Shift+ESC. You’ll see which component is being consumed more than 90%.
Multiple Programs at a time
When It comes to low performance we already know that one of the main causes could be the low RAMs and processors. In this case whenever you’ll use multiple software at a time then your laptop would surely lag or would perform slowly. To check the usage of your components being consumed by programs then you can simply go to the same Windows Task Manager to check it out.
There you can check which software is using how much RAM, CPU, GPU, Internet, and Drives. Everything you need to get to know about usage, you’ll get to know there. To check which software is using much of the performance (RAM, CPU, GPU, etc), you can just set it to descending order.
You might be shocked that there would be a lot of software that you’re even not using, you can simply turn them off. Such as maybe your window is being updated in the background and using your drive, processor, and internet. But you should let it update your system to get new features in your windows.
Clean Malware and Viruses
If your laptop was performing well just after buying it but now you’re feeling it’s quite slower than that speed. Then you much check whether your computer is infected by malware, spyware, or any viruses. To deal with this program you can keep the Windows defender activated all the time or can use any paid or free anti-virus that will protect and let you know about the recently injected malware or virus in your device. You can scan your device a quarter a month to be aware of recently installed malware and viruses.
Format Your New Laptop
Last but not the least, if you tried everything and don’t want to get messed yourself in such complicated things do. Then the easy solution for all your programs related to software is to format your whole laptop, If you’ve not any data in it that most probably you wouldn’t have as you recently bought it.
After formatting reinstalls your windows from the official website or take a perfect ISO file and install it on a USB and make it bootable. And then here it goes to the new windows operating system. But keep in mind your whole system software and data stored in your primary drive would be erased and your windows would start from scratch.
Conclusion
These were the possible causes why my brand new laptop is slow. And I’ve explained them and even told you how you can fix them. In the end, I would highly recommend you, if you recently bought it, a couple of days ago. Then you must return it back there could be any fault that cannot be fixed such as a hardware issue.
